The Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition have been in Malta since 1842. The congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition was founded by Saint Emily de Vialar who on her way to Algiers was shipwrecked in Malta. Saint Emily de Vialar saw this episode as a sign from God to establish her congregation here. She first opened a school in Vittoriosa, and soon after the sisters were called to take care of a Conservatory in Cospicua for orphans from the Cottonera district.
