St Helen’s Gate

St Helen’s Gate or as it is also known Porta dei Mortari is the main gate of the Santa Margherita Lines. Initially, it was also the main entrance to the city of Cottonera. Its design is similar to the main gate of Fort Manoel which were both designed by Charles François de Mondion. It was built in 1736 during the time of Grand Master António de Vilhena. St. Helen’s Gate has a Baroque style and is considered as one of the most beautiful 18th century gateways. St. Helen’s Gate is on the Antiquities List of 1925 whilst it is also listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands.
