Freedom Monument

Designed by the local sculptor Antonio Agius, the Freedom monument commemorates the end of an era, when the British closed their military base in Malta and left the island on 31st March 1979. Malta had already obtained Independence in 1964 and became a Republic within the Commonwealth in 1974. However, till 1974 Malta was still a military base to the Royal Navy, thus the then Prime Minister Dom Mintoff wanted Malta to stop functioning as a military base of a foreign power. The Freedom Monument is more than just a monument as it commemorates a turning point in Malta’s modern political history.
